These are some definitions of important Lacrosse terminology:
- Attacker, Midfielder, Defender, and Goalie
- These are the positions that are played in lacrosse. Midfielders are often referred to as “middies.”
- Faceoff
- A faceoff is what happens at the beginning of each game, half, and following a goal score. It is between two players with the objective of gaining possession of the ball for their team.
- Check
- A check is a defensive move used to disrupt an opponent. It can be a stick check, which is using a stick to target an opponent’s stick, or a body check which uses physical contact.
- Crease
- The crease is a circular marked zone surrounding each goal. It serves as the goalkeeper’s protective area where opposing players are not allowed to enter.
- Cradle
- Cradling in lacrosse refers to the technique used to keep the lacrosse ball secure in the pocket of the lacrosse stick while running or dodging.
- Dodge
- Dodging in lacrosse refers to an offensive move used to beat a defender, create space, and move toward the opposing goal.
- Clear
- Clearing in lacrosse is moving the ball from the defensive end of the field across to the midfield into the offensive end.
- Slash
- Slashing is a personal foul that refers to when a player swings their lacrosse stick at an opponent’s body or stick with excessive force.
